What Truly Determines Software Development Costs

Aus Parkrat Görlitzer Park 2024

The biggest cost driver is rarely technology — it is how much is still undecided. Each unanswered question in the requirements becomes padding somewhere in the quote. A supplier that has no visibility into the edge cases must assume a pessimistic case. Spending a week on requirements work often reduces the total far more than any rate negotiation.

Integrations are the next major mvp development cost multiplier. A screen that writes to your own database is predictable; the same screen connected to an old accounting system is another matter entirely. The unknown lives in the counterparty: undocumented APIs, long certification processes, fields that mean something different on each side. Ask any vendor to break integrations out as separate items, since this is the usual source of overruns.

Non-functional requirements quietly rewrite the number. A tool used by a small internal team costs far less than the same functionality serving thousands of external customers. Security reviews, high availability, load handling, audit logging and localisation all add weeks of work. State them early or expect them priced as extras.

The mix of people behind the number changes the arithmetic. An hourly rate says almost nothing on its own: one senior developer at a premium rate is often cheaper per delivered feature than two juniors who require heavy code review. Check too who else is billed: coordination, QA, DevOps and UX design are legitimate costs, but they must be itemised.

The number in the proposal is rarely what you will actually spend. Plan for infrastructure, third-party licences, observability difference between laravel and symfony a maintenance allowance for every year the software runs. A reasonable rule of thumb says that any production system needs a meaningful share of the initial investment annually simply to stay current. Ignoring this is the most common budgeting mistake.
